What is NLP?
Thrive Impulse brings its wealth of expertise and specialties in Hypnotherapy, NLP (Neuro-Linguistic Programming), NLP Coaching and Timeline Therapy®have proven to help diverse individuals to resolve mental challenges, learning and communication difficulties, behavioural issues, etc.
Neuro–Linguistic Programming (NLP) – This is a way of controlling the outcome of something. A person can use NLP to ‘predetermine excellence’ by adjusting the language we use.
Neuro – linguistic programming (NLP) is a technique used to provide clients with the tools to overcome certain life obstacles. NLP is in short, a way of helping people help themselves to reach a state of excellence, happiness and peace of mind.
NLP is a learning model devised by two American academics (Dr Richard Bandler and John Grinder) in the early 70s, who were fascinated by the relationship between language behaviour and excellence. They believed that by analysing the unconscious linguistic techniques used by successful people, they could produce ‘a recipe for excellence’ in which other people could consciously learn to apply said ‘successful techniques.
NLP is the art and science of personal excellence.
– Joseph Connor and John Seymour.
To break it down, the science aspect is the process of extracting and learning the techniques. The art aspect is the act of applying the techniques to our own lives.
There are four ways NLP techniques are most commonly used:
- To teach effective communication
- To ensure continual personal development
- To enhance learning
- To encourage a greater enjoyment in life
- NLP is used to teach us how changing our perception of the world can lead us to adjust and adapt our behaviours to live the life we want.
The benefits of NLP
NLP is often regarded as a ‘tool-kit for the mind’. Because of this, NLP is a method used to improve many areas in a person’s life. NLP is known to be a particularly effective treatment for:
- Anxiety
- Fears and phobias
- Relationship problems
- Stress
- Health and well-being
- Low confidence
-
NLP techniques
NLP techniques focus on breaking down our assumptions and associations, in order to open our minds and expand our territories. For example, when faced with a challenge, do you focus on the potential problems, or the desired outcome? We explain more below.
-
Outcome or problem
In NLP, focusing on potential problems is known as following the ‘blame frame’. This involves analysing all of the negatives in great detail and asking questions such as ‘why do I have this problem?’ and ‘who’s fault is it?’. Whereas the people who focus on outcomes, find out what it is they want to achieve, what others want, the resources available and how they can utilise these to reach an outcome everyone desires.
-
How or why
When asking ‘why’ all we’re really doing is seeking affirmation of a problem that already exists. The ‘how’ question however, takes us further towards understanding the structure of a problem. For example, ‘why did this happen?’ is very limited as it searches for blame. ‘How did this happen?’ on the other hand searches for a cause and effect.
-
Feedback or failure
Often if we haven’t reached a goal, we think we’ve failed. Generally the term ‘failure’ connotes negativity and disappointment. But what if we look at failure instead, as a form of feedback and an opportunity to reflect? Thinking in this way can open up your possibilities and help you to achieve your goal the second, third or fourth time round. Instead of feeling disappointment, analyse the steps you took and identify which ones can be changed. Essentially, this is the common idea of ‘learning from our mistakes’.
-
Possibility or necessity
Instead of considering the necessities in a difficult situation, consider the possibilities. Possibilities open the doors to potential, whereas necessities (thinking about what you have to do) can restrict your way of thinking and only serve to narrow potential.
-
Curiosity and fascination, or assumption
A big part of NLP is opening the mind to change and possibility. Assuming we know something can limit the expansion of that knowledge. You may know that the world is round, but you should never assume that your knowledge is stationary. Knowledge is transitory and the more we learn, the more that changes. Just think, there once was a time where many people ‘knew’ the world was flat!

Time line Theraphy
Time Line Therapy™ (TLT) is a powerful therapeutic process that has evolved from hypnosis and NLP, developed by Tad James, PhD in the 1980s. It was developed by applying a therapeutic process to the concept that we store our memories in a linear manner in an internal memory storage system.
TLT provides one of the most powerful processes and techniques for personal change and growth by facilitating the elimination of the painful emotions attached to memories or events in the past. TLT also focuses on what we can learn from those events and use what we learn as a resource for the future. Time Line Therapy™ techniques and practical processes produce long-lasting transformation much quicker than what is currently called “brief therapy”, with a minimum of discomfort to the client. Some examples of painful emotions include anger, rage, sadness, hurt, regret, fear, guilt, and remorse.
TLT also enables you to clear limiting beliefs that can leave you stuck in the past and stops you from creating what you want in your life. Both unwanted negative emotions and limiting beliefs influence every area of our lives.
One of the many advantages of TLT is that it enables you to release and clear gestalts or (chains) of an emotion rather than one at a time as most other emotional release techniques do. For example, if you have anger issues, TLT facilitates the releasing and clearing ALL anger from the past and not just the anger attached to a particular event. In other words, the anger is released from its roots.
We believe that this is one of the main reasons why the client is able to get the result he wants so quickly and experience lasting results. Some people get confused that the memories of painful events are cleared.
It is ONLY the negative emotions attached to the memories that are cleared in TLT. Memories are our history and it is not ecological or appropriate to clear them.
TLT is invaluable in enabling individuals to resolve negative emotional issues from the past and clear limiting beliefs and decisions that may have prevented them from moving forward as well as achieving their goals for the future. Some examples of limiting beliefs are: “I don’t deserve it”, “I am just not good enough”. Many clients with emotional issues get the result they want in or around six hours, rather than months and years.
Where more complex conditions such as PTSD or trauma or physiological conditions are also involved, it may take a while longer. One of the main advantages of Time Line Therapy™ is that instead of talking about the problem week after week the client gets to do something about it. TLT is usually used in conjunction with clinical hypnosis and NLP and together they provide a powerful therapeutic model.
TLT should not be confused with what is called Time Line, which is also a technique based on neuro-linguistic programming (NLP) and is very different from TLT.
Mind-body medicine and PNI (psychoneuroimmunology) studies explain the effects of unresolved negative emotions and how they affect physical health and can lead to the development of symptoms and illness in the physical body. Also, from the point of how we perceive stress and respond to it is influenced by the unresolved emotional issues and can also influence the intensity of the stressful experience.
Many people find relaxation, meditation and yoga useful to deal with stress and often feel better for it in the short term. Clients who practise them tell me, that the unresolved painful emotions tend to counteract the benefits in the long-term.
We believe that clearing the negative emotions and limiting decisions from the past is likely to significantly enhance the practice of these techniques in maintaining mind-body health.
Time Line Therapy™ is most effective with anxiety and stress-based conditions such as exam nerves, performance anxiety, panic, phobia, trauma and PTSD as well as depression.
We believe that one of the reasons may be that training of practitioners requires a high level of awareness of both hypnosis and NLP as the processes use both. TLT practitioner membership also requires hypnosis and NLP at the practitioner level. We know as practitioners and trainers of TLT, that some of the conditions dealt with therapy are quite complex and client safety and comfort is paramount. The TLT practitioner must be confident in the use of the processes involved.
As practitioner of TLT, it requires a high level of competency, it is not something a therapist could learn over a weekend or two unless they have a sound knowledge of both hypnosis and NLP. As an example, TLT processes use NLP reframing extensively. Time Line Therapy™ is the registered trademark of Tad James and exclusively licenced to the Time Line Therapy™ Association.

Hypnotheraphy?
Hypnotherapists aim to induce a relaxed and receptive state (trance) in their clients in order to access the subconscious. Many of the obstacles that prohibit or limit a person’s experiences are deeply embedded in the subconscious, so by accessing the thought processes that usually remain hidden, hypnotherapists can work with clients to change the restrictive thought pattern and make room for positive development.
An NLP practitioner will look at your attitude, your language and how you use it, your understanding of relationships and your ability to build rapport, as well as the physical and emotional states that are best for accomplishing a task.
Effective communication and perception of others and ourselves, will also be key focuses. All of these will be analysed and examined by the professional, so that a strategy for improving understanding, motivation, learning and memory can be formed.
Many hypnotherapists train in NLP to help improve their ability to communicate more effectively with their clients, as well as to help their clients communicate more effectively with themselves.
Hypnotherapy is about the power of suggestion. It’s a form of talking therapy that can be used to access someone’s deep subconscious mind, to make healthy suggestions to help change or modify behaviour. The practise will see you entering a deep relaxation state – you are still aware and in control of your body at all times whilst the hypnotherapist then talks you through scenarios that help you manage said conditions, or change unhealthy behaviours.
In this ‘hypnotic state’ you are more open to suggestion and therefore more susceptible to changing your behaviour.
In hypnosis, a person will be more open to suggestion and therefore be able to change patterns of behaviour that are unhelpful, but no one can make you do anything you don’t want to do.
There are a variety of hypnotherapy techniques that your practitioner can tap into, it all depends on what you need help with and what toolkit your therapist has. For example, Solution Focused Hypnotherapy can be very effective if you have goals you want to achieve, but have been unable to set reasonable steps to achieve these. It focuses on the solution, or the goal. You may benefit from this form of hypnotherapy if you struggle with anxiety, or conditions that have been fuelled by anxiety such as OCD or panic disorder.
Hypnotherapy is also known to be particularly effective for breaking unhealthy habits, most commonly smoking and body focused repetitive behaviours – such as skin picking or hair pulling. It is common that the unhealthy habit is a response to a uncomfortable situation, so a therapist’s job is to replace those habits with healthy coping strategies.
The beauty of hypnotherapy is that really, the power is in your hands. It’s about heading to your sessions with an open mind and a want to tune in to what your therapist is saying. Think of this as your time, just for you.
Hypnotherapy can bring about change through a positive – and relaxing – experience. Some of the benefits include:
- Focus on the here and now. This therapy is intrinsically linked to the present tense. What is working, or not working, in our lives that we want to change for the better.
- Find deep relaxation. A key element to the practise of hypnotherapy is being able to enter a deep state of relaxation or a ‘hypnotic trance’.
- Regular practise of this can help you live a more balanced, less-stressful life.
- Achieve success. Goal setting is a key area of focus in some hypnotherapy practises.
- Increase motivation. Through defining a clear pathway to your goals, and introducing healthy behaviour patterns, hypnotherapy can aid motivation.
- Reduce pain.
Hypnotherapy can be a viable option if you are looking for an alternative to traditional talking therapies. Although it isn’t appropriate for everyone, it is certainly worth considering.

My relationship with Nasreen and Thrive Impulse has been very valuable for several reasons, the opportunity to get objective feedback on my sessions. I was able to exploit my strengths and improve in many areas of risk or blind spots. I definitely reconnected with the power of my own instincts and enhanced my confidence listening to what my 'guts' tell me. I value very much being able to stay in touch with my coach, she is ready to listen and help. She is not the typical consultant or coach who gives you theoretical advice. Her advice is practical and effective.
